President of the University of Petra, Prof. Rami Abdel-Rahim, in the presence of UOP's Chancellor, Prof. Adnan Badran, patronized the opening of the Mud House and the permanent Building Materials Expo on the University campus, an output of a research project conducted under the sponsorship of UOP's Deanship of Scientific Research by a Department-of-Architecture research team comprising Dr. Amer Al-Jokhadar, Dr. Yasser Abu Hashem, and Eng. Yasmine Al-Saudi.
Using environment-friendly mud as a basic construction material, the Mud House is a pioneering project in Jordan and the region that not only responds to the rise in building materials prices, but also lessen the use of cement, a major source of carbon dioxide emissions, and provides healthy indoor environmental conditions with moderate temperatures and humidity.
Dr. Adnan Badran stressed that the University of Petra seeks to make its campus an environment-friendly place by sponsoring research projects focused on sustainability and finding solutions to contemporary environmental issues, such as clean water, clean energy, energy efficiency, waste management, water recycle, transportation, built environment, and infrastructure.
When giving a presentation on the project stages and results, the researchers, Dr. Amer Al-Jokhadar and Eng. Yasmine Al-Saudi, indicated that the study aimed to explore the potentials of using mud as a main building material in preference to cement and to find sustainable and environmentally friendly construction solutions; construction studies were conducted to find out the best materials and mixtures, and special studies were made to treat moisture and mold that afflict mud buildings.
The building, 190 square meters in area, houses a meeting room, a lecture hall, and a permanent exhibition of building materials and supplies, providing a good opportunity for students of the Faculty of Architecture and Design and the Faculty of Engineering to get to know construction materials used in different stages of construction.
Prof. Faisal Abu Al-Rub, Dean of Scientific Research and Graduate Studies said that the results of this research provide a valuable resource for researchers interested in environmentally friendly buildings, a point also confirmed by the University President, who highlighted the importance of scientific research in such areas as sustainability and environmentally friendly buildings.
Prof. Adnan Badran and Prof. Rami Abdel-Rahim honored those in charge of the project, awarding certificates of appreciation to the director of the University engineering office, Ahmed Al-Farhan, members of the research team, members of the committee in charge of interior design and the building materials exhibition, and the sponsor companies supporting the exhibition.
The ceremony was attended by faculty deans, department heads, and a number of faculty members and students.
