The University of Petra hosted a two-day international workshop titled “Sustainability in Jordanian Universities," with the participation of faculty members and students from the University of Petra, Yarmouk University, Amman Al-Ahliyya University, and Germany's Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences (H-BRS).
In his opening remarks, Prof. Rami Abdel-Rahem, President of the University of Petra, welcomed the participants and emphasized the university's commitment to supporting joint academic projects among universities, noting their significant role in internationalizing Jordanian higher education and strengthening its global presence.
The workshop was held as part of a project funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), titled “Awareness and Capacity Building for Sustainability in Jordanian Universities." The event aimed to introduce the concept of sustainability in higher education institutions and to identify relevant gaps and capacity needs.
The University of Petra team, represented by Prof. Wael Hadi, Dr. Ali Al-Maqousi, and Dr. Nasreen Al-Atoum, presented an overview of the university's initiatives and projects that promote sustainability, showcasing them as a model of ongoing efforts within Jordanian universities. The presentation also featured Dr. Nidal Hussein, Assistant Director of the Quality Assurance, Planning, and Measurement Unit.
During the practical sessions, led by Prof. Iris Gross, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at H-BRS, participants exchanged perspectives on sustainability domains within universities, including environment, energy and water, education, and research. They also proposed innovative solutions to enhance awareness and best practices in sustainability.
Dr. Ali Al-Maqousi, Director of the Office of External Funding and Technology Transfer at the University of Petra, noted that the project will include two additional workshops to further these discussions and achieve the project's objectives. The second workshop will be held in Germany in November, followed by a third workshop in Jordan.
