Introduction

After nearly two decades of launching (1991), our highly recognized Department of Journalism and Media at the University of Petra, we have decided to offer a master’s program in media studies in the academic year 2011/2012, building on our long and rich experience in the preparation of journalists and other media professionals, from Jordan and other countries of the Arab homeland.

This initiative was taken in response to the increasing need for graduates with master’s degrees in journalism and media studies following the growing interest in the study of media, as indicated by the establishment in other Jordanian universities of additional media departments and colleges offering undergraduate programs.

These developments have necessitated the establishment of graduate study programs for students wishing to further advance their education and skills. We strongly feel the need for such programs as we witness the heightening interest in various media issues such as professionalism of journalists, freedom of the press, media ethics and legislations, and the growing information role of websites. All these developments call for university studies and in-depth scientific research, which contribute to the scientific and systematic understanding of media phenomena and issues.

Objectives of the Program
Providing the new generation of media specialists with opportunities to further enhance their knowledge and skills in the various fields of media.
Enabling students to keep up with the great progress made in media and communication sciences.

Training students on the latest technologies used in the modern communication industry and in all fields of media production.

Raising students’ scientific, academic and vocational levels of knowledge, and preparing them in accordance to meet the needs of the labor market.

Training academically-qualified personnel to assume responsibilities in developing communication and specialized media.

Strengthening the relationship between Petra University and media institutions, through the utilization of training opportunities available in these institutions, and providing these institutions with specialists capable of contributing to the further advancement of media professions.

Preparing distinguished students to further pursue their graduate studies to meet the growing needs of media departments and colleges in Jordan and the Arab homeland for qualified teaching personnel.
