Introduction

After nearly two decades of launching our highly recognized Department of Journalism and Media at the University of Petra, we have decided to offer a Master’s Program in Media Studies, building on our long and rich experience in the preparation of journalists and other media professionals, from Jordan and other countries of the Arab homeland. This initiative was taken in response to the increasing need for graduates with Master’s degrees in Journalism and Media Studies following the growing interest in the study of Media, as indicated by the establishment in other Jordanian universities of additional media departments and colleges offering Undergraduate programs. These developments have necessitated the establishment of graduate study programs for students wishing to further advance their education and skills. We strongly feel the need for such programs as we witness the heightening interest in various media issues such as professionalism of journalists, freedom of the press, media ethics and legislations, and the growing information role of websites. All these developments call for university studies and in-depth scientific research which contribute to the scientific and systematic understanding of media phenomena and issues.
