Overview 
Globalization has resulted in a sharp rise in the demand for professional translators and interpreters in Jordan and the Arab World. This pressing demand for qualified translators and interpreters who are capable of breaking the linguistic barriers between people belonging to different linguistic and cultural backgrounds is the main reason behind the initiation of the Master Degree in Translation at Petra University. The MA program combines both practical and theoretical aspects of translation. It provides students with adequate training in written and oral translation from English into Arabic and vice versa. It also emphasizes the theoretical issues involved in translation. The program is ideal for students aspiring to work after graduation as translators or interpreters at private companies, local and international institutions, or wishing to pursue further academic studies in the field.
Objectives of the Program
  • Equip students with sound knowledge and training to qualify as translators and interpreters, both academically and professionally.
  • Provide students with an understanding of the challenges facing professional translators or interpreters, and with adequate strategies to overcome such challenges.
  • Prepare qualified translators and interpreters who can meet the demand of the labor market.
  • Promote research in the field of translation and /or interpretation.
  • Prepare students to pursue further graduate studies to meet the growing demand of academic institutions in Jordan and the Arab World for qualified teaching staff.
Cooperation Agreements
  1. Petra University and the University of Sunderland in Britain.
  2. Petra University and the University of Notre Dame in Lebanon.
Entry Qualifications
  • University graduates from public and private Jordanian and Arab universities with BA degrees in Translation or other English Language disciplines.
  • University graduates with degrees in other academic Disciplines, such as Business Administration; Economics; Political Studies; Engineering; Medical Studies; Media; Journalism etc...
Requirements for Graduate Study
  1. The applicant should be competent in Arabic.
  2. The applicant should have a BA degree from an accredited university with a GPA of "Good".
  3. The applicant who has a BA degree from an accredited University with a GPA of "Fairwill be placed on academic probation. S/He has to study (3) courses on the study plan and score an average of not less than (70%), or its equivalent, and a cumulative GPA of not less than (75%), or its equivalent, to be admitted to the program. The student who fails to remove the academic probation will be dismissed or she/he has to re-register. The courses successfully completed will be credited to the student's record.
  4. A TOEFL score of at least (550) or its equivalent.

Medium of Instruction

  1. English.
  2. Translation is carried out from English into Arabic and vice versa.

  • The Comprehensive Exam Track
    This track consists of (33) credit hours: (24) of which are obligatory and (9) are elective.
  • The Thesis Track
    This track consists of (33) credit hours: (18) of which are obligatory; (6) are elective; and (9) are allotted to the thesis.
