Welcome to the Department of English where you will be trained and be prepared to serve as well-qualified service providers to your local and regional communities. This department is considered the mainstay for graduating prospective translators and teachers of English as a Foreign Language. We’re looking forward to your participation in our programs.
While being keenly aware of the college’s and university’s visions and goals, the department’s mission is to provide a creative and supportive learning environment for our students. This will empower them to use the skills of bilingual and semi- bi-cultural communicators. It is hoped that after graduation, they will function as facilitators of cross-cultural communication through the delivery of proper and purposeful translations from and into Arabic.
Our philosophy of teaching is informed by the following inextricably intertwined principles:
Full appreciation of our students’ language skills at the initial stages of training
The belief in striking a balance between vocational and academic training
Awareness raising of the job market demands and translating institutions’ norms and conventions on translation quality assessment
Achieving positive interaction between language teaching and translation teaching as they both share a common communicative orientation
As Chair of this department, I have high expectations of our teaching staff as we seek to realize our ambition of leading our department to be recognized as among the very best, if not the best, for teaching and research. Equally, I have high expectations of our students and expect them to dedicate themselves to their studies as well as enjoy all the social benefits of joining this renowned university.
