:الملخص

This chapter explores the social and psychological impact of cultural and creative activities on displaced people. According to the UNHCR “Global Trends” report (2015), global forced displacement reached a new peak in 2015, with 65,3 million people forcibly displaced worldwide “as a result of persecution, conflict, generalized violence or human rights violation”, 12,4 million of which only in 2015 (2015: 2). Among these 65,3 million displaced people, 21,3 million are refugees, while 3,2 million are asylum seekers (2). With the number of refugees steadily on the rise, understanding, understanding how to ease the transition to a new place of settlement, and how to improve the lives of refugees and asylum seekers and their integration in their societies of settlement, is of growing concern. Drawing upon studies in the field of migration, health, arts and wellbeing, this chapter will discuss the theoretical perspectives of the potential of cultural and creative activities to ameliorate the negative impact of displacement and improve psychosocial health

‘Heritage ethnographies’ conducted in selected Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan reveal how the ‘lived experiences’ of such communities offer further nuance and paradox to, and reconfiguration of, the ‘We Refugee’ theses of Arendt (1943) and Agamben (1995). Our research revisits the core paradox confronting the refugee ‘expelled’ into ‘no-man’s-land’: simultaneous reconfiguration within a ‘bio-political rites of passage’ and within the obligation to constitute the ‘vanguard of their people’. We subsequently argue the presence of powerful ‘popular heritage rites’ operating within camps that as expressions of refugee agency, activated heritage forms, and potent ritual acts of communion, - including magical thinking and wish-fulfilment – create new ‘factness’ and ‘realities’ on the ground. We contend that just as these ethnographies position the Palestinian ‘thobe’ (embroidered dress) as powerfully encompassing the efficacies of popular rites, heritage similarly undergoes reconfiguration to become powerfully centred within struggles to ‘clothe’ ‘bare life’ and simultaneously embedded within wider quests to possess the ‘Good Life’ in extremis.

This paper analyses the three-floor gallery plans of the Abu-Jaber Museum that correspond to the two stages in the evolution of the Abu-Jaber House: 1880, when it was originally constructed to house the families of three affluent brothers; and 2007, when it was rehabilitated into a local heritage museum. Using a multi-method approach of ethnographic observation, space syntax analysis, and interviews, we find that the 2009 spatial and morphological conversion constitutes a certain phenomenological departure from the spatial principles embedded in the original plans. We suggest that this is linked to a predominant approach in the process of adaptive use where the essence of the original spatial configuration is overlooked. We discuss the three-way interaction between spatial structure and its architectural language, interpretations of conservation priorities and curatorial principles.
