The Department of Mathematics at University of Petra was established with the founding of the University in 1991 and was suspended in 2001. Realizing the importance and necessity of Mathematics by the University, the Department was re-established in 2016, with a two-fold aim: to graduate students specialized in Mathematics, and to strengthen the fundamentals of Mathematics and Physics needed by the scientific majors at the University. Consequently, in addition to offering a program leading to a B. Sc. degree in Mathematics, the Department is responsible for the Math. and Physics courses that are required by majors in the Faculties of Architecture and Design, Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Information Technology and Pharmacy and Medical Sciences.
The Department aspires to become one of the leading departments of Mathematics in the region upon providing high quality education and nurturing research in Mathematical Sciences.
To graduate students who are highly qualified in Mathematics to efficiently practice various related professions, or to pursue graduate studies in Mathematics.
Provide students with up-to-date, stimulating and effective learning in Mathematics which conforms with the highest international standards.
Enforce the abilities of students to think abstractly and critically, solve problems logically, and construct and write mathematical proofs systematically.
Allow students to enjoy the beauty and the necessity of Mathematics in life.
Provide students of other majors with the necessary and sufficient background in Math. and Physics as needed in their majors.
Instill in students the importance of research in developing their local communities and humility at large.
Nurturing freedom of thought and expression.
Encouraging sense of inquiry, innovation and creativity.
