UOP Languages Center Holds Workshop on Teaching Arabic to Non-native Arabic Speakers

The Languages Center of the University of Petra (UOP) hosted a workshop on teaching Arabic to non-native Arabic speakers, entitled: “Innovative and Modern Approaches and Methods in Teaching Arabic to Non-native Arabic Speakers: Examples from Personal Experience”, presented by Dr. Eman Suleiman, who serves as a member of teaching staff at the American University of Cairo (AUC).
The two-day workshop aimed at presenting the newest methods and techniques used in teaching Arabic to non-native Arabic speakers and addressed six key topics.
Moreover, the workshop discussed how technology is used in teaching Arabic to non-native Arabic speakers, their importance in teaching and methods of merging technology with other teaching methods.
The workshop addressed the methods of teaching Arabic to non-native Arabic speakers through integrating students in the Arabic-speaking communities and preparing a curriculum on this teaching method in light of the experience of the Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA), affiliated to AUC.
The workshop addressed the methods of integrating culture in the curricula of teaching Arabic to non-native Arabic speakers as culture and language are two sides of the same coin.
Dr. Suleiman reviewed flipped teaching method that is based on explaining the course by means of recorded lectures to students in order for them to prepare the material and discuss it with the members of teaching staff later. The participants were divided into groups to apply what were discussed in the topics of the workshop.
Members of teaching staff from the University of Petra (UOP), University of Jordan and Middle East University and a number of experts who obtained Fulbright grants to teach Arabic language in the United States of America in the Academic year 2018/2019, attended the workshop.
