Historical Background
In the academic year 2003/2004, and due to the growing demands on information technology studies, the Computer Science Department, which was serving IT students since 1991, went through a major change to finally become the Faculty of Information Technology. As an independent faculty, FIT developed a well-structured a strategic plan with emphasis on quality educational programs and practical training. FIT was also capable of serving larger numbers of students with a wider range of IT related programs. These programs include: Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Software Engineering, and Computer Networks.

Faculty Members and Staff
The faculty of Information Technology attracts highly qualified faculty members who possess experience in both teaching and research. In addition to teaching loads, research, and advising, every faculty member is required to join various committees, to participate in faculty activities, to serve the local community, and to join faculty members' development programs. Every faculty member is also required to adhere to quality standards, and to play a major role in the Quality Assurance Process. Staff members at FIT are also carefully selected with proper experience to best serve students as well as faculty members. The FIT hosts and an excellent team of administrative and technical staff including programmers and developers, network and security administrators, web and media designers, e-learning specialists and e-learning developers, and Laboratory Supervisors.

Computer and Network Labs
A distinguishing feature of the faculty of IT, at Petra University, is the high ratio of computers to students which reaches more than 1:1.6. The faculty hosts 15 computer labs equipped with the latest branded computers connected to a secured local network with Internet access. These labs serve Window and Linux Applications, as well as Multi-Media Programming. Three of the labs are highly sophisticated network labs to serve as Cisco Training labs to teach CCNA, CCNP, CCNP Wireless, and IP-Telephony courses.

Classrooms: Our classrooms are carefully designed to be comfortable for students and instructors. Classrooms are equipped with PC's, data shows, screens, white boards, and Internet Connection.

The Faculty of Information Technology offers four distinguished degree programs leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in IT related fields as follows:.

Computer Science
Overview
Computer science is the systematic study of algorithmic methods for representing and transforming information, including their theory, design, implementation, application, and efficiency. The discipline emerged in the 1950s from the development of computability theory and the invention of the stored-program electronic computer. The roots of computer science extend deeply into mathematics and engineering. Mathematics imparts analysis to the field; engineering imparts design.

Career Opportunities:
Computer Programmer, Systems Analyst, Computer Administrator, Systems Developer, Network Administrator, Database Administrator, Computer Lab Supervisor, Research Assistant, Internet and Web Developer, Computer Trainer or Instructor.

Computer Information Systems
Overview
The Computer Information Program is designed so that a student is capable upon his/her graduation to play a major role in the workforce of Information Systems. Courses are carefully selected in this program to cover a range of areas including computer science, information systems and information science, business administration, and management. These courses are blended together to provide the student with the essentials needed in systems planning and development, and systems analysis and design.

Career Opportunities:
system administrator, computer network administrator, application developer, web developer, database designer, database programmer, e-business developer, computer instructor, and lab supervisor.

Software Engineering
